Rising demand for public transport, but professional drivers are rare

The European Commission sees a sharp increase in the professional transport sector, driven by rising demand for public transport and increasing economic growth. But already, one in 5 professional driver jobs in the EU is unfilled, and a wave of retirements is predicted to soon double that number.
While professional drivers in the EU are on average 50 years old, in the UK they are even 5 years older. The staff shortage in the UK is growing by 50 drivers a day and Poland will lack 200,000 drivers until 2022.
Also in the U.S., the average age is 48 and the need for truck drivers will be nearly 900,000 by 2025, according to the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) & American Trucking Associations.
