Initial Situation

At Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, students are required to take the mandatory course Clinical Neuropsychology as part of the Master’s Program in Rehabilitation Psychology. The established curriculum for this program was to be expanded to include the use of digital psychological assessment.

Project Aim & Challenge

The primary goal was to provide students with evidence-based as well as realistic and practical insights into the application of digital neuropsychological assessment. With this in mind, SCHUHFRIED and the program director developed a module that covers the theory and practice of digitalization in neuropsychological assessment in depth.

Procedure

The module consisted of an independent study component and two advanced classes taught by Professor Claudia Wendel and an expert from SCHUHFRIED, Dr. David Brieber. The independent study component focused on theoretical aspects of neuropsychological assessment, while the two classes emphasized practical applications.

In preparation, Dr. Brieber provided the students with specialist literature on international neuropsychological assessment instruments, which the students then analyzed and reflected upon during their independent studies. The primary objective was to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current assessment practice as well as the potential of digital neuropsychological testing procedures.

The students formulated statements and questions on these issues, which Dr. Brieber used as a guide for his lecture and the ensuing discussion. Subsequently, the students were then given free online access to the Vienna Test System (VTS online) to practice using digital psychological tests during role-playing in small groups under the guidance of Professor Wendel.

During a final session with the small groups, Dr. Brieber presented a lecture on conventional and future assessment procedures and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of digital neuropsychological assessment with the participants.

“The implementation of the module was an enormous benefit as well as an opportunity for the students to explore the digitalization of assessment beyond the field of clinical neuropsychology.”

Prof. Dr. Claudia Wendel
Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology

Result

In this module the students were able to study the current research on neuropsychological assessment procedures intensively, acquire experience in using common tests, and broaden their perspective through critical dialogue with an external expert. All participants rated the project positively in the follow-up survey.
