Application

Assesses verbal working memory.
One of the most important tasks performed by working memory is to maintain and update verbal material (visual material is assessed by the test N-Back non-verbal NBN). The test uses the N-back paradigm.
The NBV makes demands on both (a) a specific function of verbal working memory, the updating of contents, and (b) the ability to operationalize verbal working memory “overall”. Disorders of working memory occur in a number of clinically relevant illnesses and injuries, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and ADHD. The test is therefore used mainly in clinical neuropsychology.

Administration

Consonants are presented one after the other. The respondent’s task is to state whether the consonant currently displayed is identical to the one shown two places back (2-back paradigm) or three places back (3-back paradigm). If it is, the respondent presses a button as quickly as he can.

Scoring

The following main variable is scored:

Correct: Measure of the ability to recall memory representations from short- and long-term memory, store them in the short term and continuously update them.

The subsidiary variables Mean time “correct”/”incorrect” function as a measure of working speed and reaction speed; they are independent of the quality of the respondent’s answers.
