Application

Assesses the ability to receive and process peripheral visual information. Good visual perception is indispensable for many activities – such as driving a motor vehicle – in which humans interact with machines. It repeatedly transpires that one of the main causes of accidents is the delayed or incomplete perception of information relating to relevant circumstances in the environment.
Good visual perception is also crucial to success in many sports, such as football and handball. The test is therefore used both in recruitment (especially in the field of safety assessments) and in assessments in the fields of traffic psychology and sports psychology.

Administration

The test involves two tasks – a central tracking task and a peripheral perception task. Light diodes generate light stimuli that move at a defined speed in the peripheral visual field. Critical stimuli appear at pre-defined intervals; the respondent reacts to these critical stimuli by depressing the foot pedal. At the same time a tracking task must be performed on the screen.

One test form.

Scoring

The following main variables are scored:

  • Visual field: Total field of vision in degrees. This variable provides information about the respondent’s ability to react to stimuli on the edge of the visual field; it is used to assess fitness to drive in the context of traffic psychological queries.
  • Tracking deviation: This variable describes performance on the tracking task. It can be interpreted as a measure of divided attention.
