Application

Assesses general readiness to take risks.
An individual’s general readiness to take risks is measured here via the objective measurement of achievement motivation. Achievement-motivated behavior can be attributed to two situation-related variables (incentive of success/failure and expectation of success/failure) and two person-related variables (success motivation and failure motivation). This test is used in personnel selection and development, sports psychology, and traffic psychological investigations.

Administration

The respondent’s task is to obtain as many points as possible in a game situation. The respondent uses a lever to control a circle in order to “capture” a ball that is moving freely and in unpredictable ways. The radius of the circle can be changed before each run: the smaller the circle, the larger the number of points that can be obtained.
The ball may move slowly or quickly, depending on the run. Sometimes the way in which the lever operates changes, making the task more difficult.

Scoring

The following main variables are scored:

  • Readiness to take risks: Measure of readiness to take risks.
  • Total number of points: Measure of visuo-spatial ability and manual dexterity.
  • Efficiency: The extent to which risk choice leads to efficient results.
  • Standard deviation of circle size: Measure of the extent to which risk choice is influence by success/failure.

Using criterion-oriented assessment, the likelihood of risk-taking when driving can be estimated, enabling respondents to be assigned to either the conspicuous extreme group or the normal group.
