Application

Measures long-term focused attention and the visual differentiation of a relevant signal when distractor signals are present.
Signal detection theory describes the perception of weak signals against a constantly changing background. It addresses the following question: under what conditions can a person detect the presence of a weak signal against a background of irrelevant signals or among other signals that could sometimes be confused with the relevant signal? The test is used mainly in personnel psychology (safety assessments in aviation psychology), in clinical neuropsychology and in sports psychology. In the clinical context it is useful in identifying deficits, such as those that occur in connection with neglect.

Administration

The screen shows a display of dots that appear and disappear at random. The respondent must react as soon as four dots form a square.

Test forms

S1: Standard (white signals on a black background)
S2: Standard, inverted (black signals on a white background)
S3: Short signal duration
S4: Signal balance (neglect assessment)

Scoring

The following main variables are scored:

  • Number of correct, delayed and incorrect reactions: Measure of visual detection performance.
  • Median detection time: Measure of the average time taken to make a correct response over the course of the complete test.

1 The “Speed/Accuracy” chart provides a simple overview of the respondent’s way of working. For example, it is easy to see from the chart whether a fast working speed is at the expense of accuracy.
